Oregon Sunstones are a type of feldspar called Labradorite. The crystals formed in lava flows that cover much of southeastern Oregon. Within the lava flow is a matrix in which the colored sunstones are found. The sunstone flow is usually (not always) covered by a hard cap-rock known as Basalt that can be up to several feet thick.

Oregon Sunstone is uncommon in its composition, clarity, and colors. It is a large, brightly colored transparent gem with colors ranging from crisp white through peach and orange to red; the exact color is determined by the amount of metals trapped within the gem. The metals were boiled out of the rocks by the lava that gave us these crystals. The more metal, the more colorful they become. In addition, Sunstone’s triangular crystalline structure gives it a prismatic effect, which splits light-rays and creates the gem’s sparkle.

Our Oregon Sunstone is 100% natural. Each gem is exactly as nature created it. It is one of the few natural American gemstones available.
